Cervical cancer is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is transmitted through sexual contact. 4 out of 5 women are infected with HPV during their lifetime, and in around 10% of cases the infection is persistent and can cause cervical cancer. 2
Cervical cancer can be prevented by vaccinating against HPV and undergoing regular screenings for pre-cancerous lesions (PAP smear). 3
